Bible verses for kids about lying and telling the truth

Every child tells a lie sooner or later, and every child gets a chance to tell the truth when it costs something. These verses help with both. Read one together, and talk about what it would look like this week.

Bible verses, New Living Translation

Five verses to read together

  1. “The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in those who tell the truth.”
    Proverbs 12:22 (NLT)
  2. “So stop telling lies. Let us tell our neighbors the truth, for we are all parts of the same body.”
    Ephesians 4:25 (NLT)
  3. “If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones. But if you are dishonest in little things, you won’t be honest with greater responsibilities.”
    Luke 16:10 (NLT)
  4. “Choose a good reputation over great riches; being held in high esteem is better than silver or gold.”
    Proverbs 22:1 (NLT)
  5. “But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.”
    1 John 1:9 (NLT)

For the parent

How to talk about it tonight

Our free lesson The Extra Ten puts it this way: “Honesty is telling the truth with your words and your hands, even the truth that costs you.” It gives a child three steps to keep: “Count your change. Spot the mistake. Give back what isn’t yours.” Tonight, try one of the lesson’s questions: “Is the truth still the truth when you are the only one who knows it?” If your child has told a lie, 1 John 1:9 above is the place to land: we tell God the truth, and he forgives. The lesson’s hardest question can wait for a quiet moment: is there a mistake that lands in your favor somewhere in your week? “You don’t have to say it out loud. Just find it, and decide now what you’ll do when it comes.”
