Bible verses for kids about kindness and feeling left out

Some days your child is the one sitting alone at lunch. Other days your child walks past someone who is. These verses speak to both: God stays close to the lonely, and he asks us to welcome others the way he welcomes us.

Bible verses, New Living Translation

Five verses to read together

  1. “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.”
    Psalm 34:18 (NLT)
  2. “Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you; he will neither fail you nor abandon you.”
    Deuteronomy 31:8 (NLT)
  3. “Therefore, accept each other just as Christ has accepted you so that God will be given glory.”
    Romans 15:7 (NLT)
  4. “Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.”
    Ephesians 4:32 (NLT)
  5. “Do to others as you would like them to do to you.”
    Luke 6:31 (NLT)

For the parent

How to talk about it tonight

If your child was the one left out, listen first, and read Psalm 34:18 together. Then the free lesson The Empty Seat looks at the same lunchroom from the other side. It says, “Kindness is not the same as being nice. Nice smiles and keeps walking. Kindness sees a person and moves toward them.” Its three steps to keep are “Notice who is alone. Move toward that person. Invite them to join you.” The lesson’s tip for parents is one question at dinner: “Who eats alone at your lunch?” If a name comes, even slowly, something important has already happened.

A note from the lessonsKindness does not require entering danger or accepting mistreatment. Get a trusted adult to help someone who is hurt or unsafe; call 911 in an emergency.
